We had a long conference with the primary physician this morning. Basically Aden's condition is broken into two categories. The first is the status of his pneumonia/bacterial infection. His labs and the x-rays showing the condition of his lungs are all improving. This seems encouraging, and it is exciting that there have not been complications in terms of additional infections, abscesses etc. However, the second category is related to the problematic buildup of fluid in his lungs, which is causing the severe pain. The chest x-rays show that the fluid buildup is worsening. I thought we were out of the woods in crossing the chest tube of the list of possible necessary procedures, but the doctor said this still may become necessary. Additionally, the fluid's pressure against the chest cavity can take time to resolve, and as long as Aden is having such acute periods of pain that require morphine, and as long as he is not able to rely on oral intake of medications, discharge looms at an undetermined and distant date in the future. She said discharge could be anywhere from two days to a week away. Obviously we are looking forward to getting Aden home and returning him to normal life, but last night was another example of how much skilled care he continues to need.
Dave and I continue to go back and forth to Saint Paul. I am exhausted now except to post these photos. Here are some images of the moments that aren't so bad - showing interesting discoveries, fun moments and a glimpse into the recent experiences of our brave boy! Not to make light of the situation (it doesn't feel at all light to us...), but we are trying hard to make some of the simple things fun when Aden is feeling better, and we are encouraging him to reflect on his own strength and bravery (thus, the pictures to share with friends and family :) )

The ambulance ride was a breeze. The attendants were the best.
The first nurse on the first day at Glencoe Regional Health Services was also an artist. She drew Aden's portrait.
